The Girls’ Room

August, 2004
Welcome to the girls’ room. This monthly column will look at the lighter side of life. We’ll have a wide range of topics; from the silly to the thoughtful. That’s how it can be when women gather. We can counsel together over the changes we see during the turn of a new century. And we can laugh at ourselves and the mundane activities of every day life. So, come on in and pull up a chair.

July 4th All Year Long

This last month we celebrated the birth of our country. Many of us did the traditional things. We watched fireworks, went on picnics, and enjoyed time with our families and friends. Then we packed everything up and headed back home and to the work week.
As July passed, I have challenged myself to appreciate all that this country offers. We are so blessed to live in a nation where we really can mind our own business and not have to worry about someone else minding it for us. We can worship as we choose. Meet with who we want. We have the right to disagree with one another. The power and water run continuously and are basically dependable. We can choose our own professions. Live anywhere without having to sign in. We can move across state borders with relative ease. Sure, it's not perfect. But the good news is, in America, we have the power to change things. That's another blessing that comes from living in this country; the freedom to change things if we don't like what we see. Often, we take these and countless other blessings, that come to us through this great nation, for granted. That's what I hope to change. As I get down on my knees at night, I am beginning to thank the Lord for the numerous blessings that come from living in this great nation. I invite you to do the same.
