A Light to Come Home By

8 Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does A LIGHT TO COME HOME BY continue the story of Jessa and Micah?
A: Yes.
Q: Do I need to read THE JEWELRY BOX in order to understand and enjoy A LIGHT TO COME HOME BY?
A: No. All of my books stand alone as complete stories. It’s important to me that readers can pick up any book I’ve written and get a complete story, regardless of whether or not it’s part of a series.
Q: Did you plan on writing a series?
A: No. In fact, I had no idea that Jessa and Micah’s story could continue. So I was surprised when I sat down to write and found that they had much more to tell.
Q: What made you decide to write A LIGHT TO COME HOME BY?
A: I attended the LDS booksellers’ convention in August of 1994. THE JEWELRY BOX was already out in stores, and many bookdealers wondered what happened to Jessa and Micah. When I informed them that the story ended with THE JEWERLY BOX, they encouraged me to write a sequel. They had fallen in love with Jessa and Micah. So, after booksellers, I came home, scrapped the project I was working on and immediately set to work on A LIGHT TO COME HOME BY. It turned out to be my favorite novel.
Q: Why is it your favorite novel?
A: A LIGHT TO COME HOME BY was written with deep emotion and an incredible focus. Out of all my novels it’s the only one that never required any rewriting. The first draft was what ended up in print. I never even sent it to an editor. That has never happened to me before or since. And I don’t look for it to happen ever again.
Q: Does this end THE JEWERLY BOX series?
A: No. THE SAND DOLLAR PROMISE is the third installment of that series. And I’m happy to say that it will be published in 2003.
Q: Is series work difficult?
A: It is for me because like I mentioned earlier, I never plan on writing a series. So I don’t map books out from the beginning which can sometimes put me in a difficult position. Sometimes I write things in the first or second book that are difficult to adhere to as I continue to write. But so far I’ve been able to work it out.
Q: Will THE SAND DOLLAR PROMISE be the last book?
A: Maybe. Probably. Hmmm. I can’t say for sure. I’ve got another idea rattling around in my head, but there’s no breath of life to it yet. I’ll have to see if Jessa and Micah have more to say.
